Ossian Students give to the Food Bank

OES Student Council had a food drive this past week. The students brought in a whopping 4141 items to donate to the Master's Pantry in Markle. (The food pantry had to make two trips there was so much food!)

BHS Show Choir

I caught the Bluffton High School Show Choir practicing this afternoon and thought I'd shoot some video. The students sound great! Which is good--because they'll be performing in the Bluffton Community Sing on December 6.

Mayor Ted visits Jericho

Bluffton Mayor Ted Ellis visited students at Jericho this week.

It's all part of his plan to visit every student in the county at one point or another...well, I think that's his plan anyway.

Whether it's a plan or a happy accident, the students love it when Mayor Ted comes around. And his visits help instill a sense of ownership in the kids when it comes to the community in which they live.

This was the third year the school hosted the event. Students from more than a dozen schools participated, followed by hundreds of their own cheering fans.
Statewide, more than 4,500 students at 20 sites competed in their own regional Spell Bowl competitions.

Markle gets new firetruck

Markle town employees Rick Asher (front) and Mike Grant (rear) provide the News-Banner with a sneak peak at the new fire truck recently purchased by the town and the surrounding townships. The truck uses foam rather than water to fight fires, and local fire fighters are currently being trained to use the new systems. Further training will be conducted this weekend, in the hope that the vehicle will be able to be used starting next week. A full, official "welcoming" ceremony is currently being planned to enable all involved in the purchase to look over the new vehicle. (Photo by Frank Shanly)

YOUNG PILOT IS LIBRARY ESSAY WINNER

Nick Huffman’s essay describing his efforts to complete his pilot’s license training made him the winner of the One Book, One County Essay Contest at the Wells County Public Library. A student at Bluffton High School, Huffman received $400 from the Friends of the Library and community donations to work toward his goal of getting his solo pilot license. The contest required students to explain their science or math-related goals and how they related to the One Book, One County reading program selection, Rocket Boys by Homer Hickam. In Huffman’s essay, he wrote the excitement of his first flight and the hours he has spent in flight training at Miller Airport. He currently has 13 hours on his IFR sheet and the essay winnings should bring him very close to achieving his license. Presenting Huffman with his award is Teresa Dustman, head of circulation at the Wells County Public Library. (photo provided)

Southern Wells Middle School Veteran's Day

On Veteran’s Day, students at Southern Wells Elementary honored veterans by having a special program. The morning program began with a few words from Mr. Brett Garrett. Jackson Bartlett led students and facility in the Pledge of Allegiance. That was followed by some patriotic readings by 6th grade students, Alexis Collins, Sydnee Jones and Jackson Bartlett. In-Harmony, 5th and 6th grade choir, took the stage to sing the Star-Spangled Banner and America, of Thee I Sing. At the conclusion of the program, a veteran’s video was shown to the assembly. SWES would like to thank all veterans in the area for their service and for those men and women currently serving all over the world.

Chili Cook-off today

The 6th annual Franklin Electric Chili Cook-Off was today. Kirk Nevins, Scott Trumble and Bluffton Fire Chief Bob Plummer judged more than two dozen entries. Homemade chili and homemade soup were in abundance...as were the bottles of water.

B-H Secretary Jean Anderson Honored

Unfortunately, it's not every day someone gets honored for years of hard work and dedicated service.
Fortunately, Bluffton High School Secretary Jean Anderson was honored by the Indiana Association of State Principals.

From the story in today's News-Banner, by B-H Senior Amy Baker:

Because of this extreme commitment, Anderson found herself on the IASP Annual Secretary’s Conference stage in Carmel, last week, accepting the Above and Beyond Award.
With more than 2,200 secretaries in the running and 200 present at the meeting, Jean’s initial reaction was a fusion of surprise, embarrassment, delight and honor. As she stepped on stage, her eyes caught her husband, daughter and two grandchildren who secretly attended, in addition to Superintendent Wayne Barker and Principal Steve Baker who had traveled and attended with her.

OES Holds 'Special Elections'

Miss a few days of work and I miss a lot.

Like this REALLY neat event last week at Ossian Elementary School:

On November 4 at 2:45, Ossian Elementary will be holding a swearing in ceremony for our student councils representatives and for our student council officers. Our guest speakers will be Mayor Ted Ellis and Senator Travis Holdman. This year, we changed how we did student council. We allowed any third, fourth and fifth grade student to be in student council. They had to get the signatures of ten people who thought they would be a good student council representative as well as get the signatures of their parents and classroom teachers. We have 70 student representatives! (which allows us two to three student reps for each classroom in the school) This week we are holding elections for the officers. Fifth grade students were allowed to run for office. We had twelve candidates (three for each office) We wanted to make the whole process a learning process about the importance of voting. On Monday, during lunch we showed a video about voting. Then every student had to register if they wanted to vote. They had to stop at a table on their way out to recess, check their name off with a parent and then print and sign their name certifying they were a member of the Ossian Community and that they were in the third, fourth or fifth grade. The idea of doing it after lunch before recess was to show them that you have to take time to register and to vote. We had about 75% register to vote (which isn't too bad). Today our candidates made their speeches and tomorrow all third, fourth and fifth graders who registered will vote. Again they will have to stop on their way out to recess (and some are quite in a hurry) and make the time to vote. At our swearing in ceremony (our first ever), we have asked Mayor Ellis and Senator Travis Holdman to speak about the importance of serving your community and getting involved. Dr. Mills will be administering the Oath of Office to the representatives and the officers. It has been a fun experience for all of us to watch the students get involved in an electoral process. Our student council is divided into sub committees and we have service projects and student activities in the planning process. Our biggest project is to help raise money along with Ossian Elementary's teachers to contribute the Ossian revitalization project. Our goal is to purchase a lamp post. We will also be holding a food drive and doing a project for the Leukemia Society (Pennies for Patients) in honor of one of our kindergartners who is undergoing treatment for Leukemia. In February we will participate in Jump Rope for Heart in cooperation with the American Heart Association. We are also planning school spirit days to promote our school community. These activities are all being planned by the student committees, with a little guidance from us (the school spirit committee wanted to have a day of no school to promote school spirit...we had to tell them that was not possible!)

Somehow, with everything I had going on, I missed this, and I am sorry for that. Student sponsors, faculty and the students themselves, worked very hard to make this program a success. Good job all of you!

Fall Fitness Frenzy at Southern Wells

To celebrate a great first nine week period of school, students in grades K-5 at Southern Wells Elementary came to the gymnasium and participated in the Fall Fitness Frenzy. During the student’s specials time on October 22nd, children participated in practicing sport and fitness skills that they have been learning during the first nine weeks. Stations such as Ghostly Aerobics, Jack O Lantern Juggling, the Goblin Jump, the Skeleton Cave and other stations with a Halloween theme were used to allow the students practice time. The students had a lot of fun with the new surroundings. Mr. Carter would like to thank several volunteers who help with the different stations: Mrs. Haler, Mrs. Zent, Mrs. Fiechter, Mrs. Coffel, Mrs. Gilbert, Mrs. Duncan, Mrs. Penrod, Mrs. Bone and Mrs. Burgan, and Mr. Haigh.

The 'Business After Hours' event at the new Wells County YMCA on Thursday was a great time to get a sneak peek at the new facility
Bluffton Mayor Ted Ellis was there, as were Bluffton Police Chief Tammy Schaffer and Bluffton Parks Director Pam Vanderkolk. So were Northern Wells Supt. Dr. Scott Mills; Wells County Economic Director Mike Row; and Wells County United Way Executive Director Pamela Beckford...just to name a few.
Oh, and the News-Banner was there, too, of course....
