Southern Wells: Honored Recipient



Recently a special United States flag was presented to Southern Wells Elementary principal Brett Garrett by Johnny Summers, SFC, Indiana National Guard. The flag had been flown over the Motor Pool of B/1-293 Infantry at Joint Base Balad, Iraq. The town of Balad is approximately 90 miles north of Baghdad. Summers was assigned as a platoon sergeant for one of the platoons of Company B, one of 7 companies Headquartered by Fort Wayne’s 1st Battalion 293rd Infantry. The task force was assigned the mission of provided convoy security to logistical convoys throughout central and southern Iraq. The unit was mobilized on December 10, 2007 and spent two and a half months training at Camp Atterbury, Indiana, and then Fort Stewart, Georgia before arriving in Iraq in early March 2008. Southern Wells students sent letters and care packages during the 07-08 school year and the 08-09 school year prior to the unit’s return on November 25, 2008.
